History of Blackjack

Blackjack – also referred to as ‘21′ and ‘pontoon’ – is a game that nowadays is generally found in a betting house with people attempting their luck on acquiring the elusive ‘twenty-one’. It’s widely presumed that the game originated in France during the 17th century. However, as with many other casino games the exact evolution of the game is still a mystery.

Pontoon was introduced to the States following the French Revolution, but the game did not become favored in the betting houses until the house offered bonus payouts. This was the only way that seemed to get players gambling on pontoon. One variation on the reward payment was for a gambler to make ‘twenty-one’ with the blackjack card (valued at 10 points) and an ace (given a value of 11 points). With the expanding appeal of the game the bonus pay outs were phased out but the name ‘pontoon’ remained.

Chemin de fer is not simply about acquiring an immediate ‘21′, but the main adventure is to defeat the dealer without busting. The betting house obviously has an edge over the black jack players over the long run, but with twenty-one the gambler holds on to an element of choice.

Since 1931 when the U.S. initial approved wagering, blackjack has grown into a classic betting house card game. Furthermore, it is the joining of both skill and math utilized in pontoon that has caused the game to be massively popular. Twenty-one gives an attractive proposition to any scientist, mathematician or gambling player looking to analyze the strategy of the game.
